How it works

Three steps to a game.

    Pool, padel, a run. You pick the thing, not the person.

    See who else is up for it nearby.

    People who picked the same thing, with a distance in whole kilometres. Never a pin on a map.

  3. 3

    Match → message → meet up.

    You both say yes, a chat opens, and it’s text only. Then go and play.

You’re matched on the thing itself: people nearby who picked the same activity, with a better read on who you’d actually enjoy playing with. Ask for your level (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) and people at it come first.

Is it free?

Yes.

We don’t think anyone should pay to make friends. Tandem is free, with ads. If you’d rather not see them, there’ll be a subscription that turns them off.

Is this a dating app?

No.

It’s for finding someone to do a thing with. A frame of pool, a set of padel, a 5 km run. Any gender can meet any gender, and the thing is the point.

Night is the mood. Safety isn’t. Here’s how Tandem works, with the lights on.

House rules

  1. Over-18s only.

    Your date of birth is checked when you sign up, by the database and not just the app.

  2. Your exact location is never saved.

    It’s rounded to a 1 km grid the moment it reaches us, and people only ever see a distance in whole kilometres.

  3. No messages without two yeses.

    Nobody can message you unless you’ve both said yes to the same activity.

  4. Text only in chat.

    No photos, videos or files, ever, so nobody can send you a picture you didn’t ask for.

  5. Every photo is scanned first.

    Every profile photo is scanned automatically for safety before anyone sees it.

  6. Photos stay off the open internet.

    Only members allowed to see your profile can load them, through links that expire after five minutes, and anyone you block can’t load them again.

  7. Photo data is stripped, twice.

    Hidden data such as location and camera details comes off every photo: on your phone, and again on our server.

  8. Get verified, if you like.

    Opt in to a face check that matches you to your photos, and get a verified badge that shows people you’re the person in your pictures.

  9. Handles are for matches.

    Your Instagram, TikTok, X or Snapchat is only shown to people you’ve matched with.

  10. Unmatch whenever you like.

    End a conversation without blocking anyone.

  11. Block anyone in one tap.

    They can’t see you, can’t message you, and drop out of your discovery.

  12. Reported messages are read by a person.

    Report from a profile or a chat. Reporting blocks them for you straight away, and a real person reads what was reported.

  13. Reports can’t be faked.

    The app captures the reported message itself, on the server.

  14. Bad behaviour gets you banned.

    Inappropriate messages or content can get an account banned, and so can behaviour that’s reported before or after a meetup.

  15. We work with the police.

    We cooperate with law enforcement. When it’s needed, and the law allows, we’ll share what we hold as evidence.

  16. Spam hits a wall.

    There are limits on how fast any account can like, message, report or upload.

  17. Leave whenever you like.

    Delete your account from inside the app, any time.

When we open

We open at 5,000.

The app is nearly ready, and when it is, we’ll still hold it back on purpose. An app for finding someone nearby only works when there’s someone nearby to find. Open too early and you’d search and find no one, which is worse than waiting. So Tandem goes live when 5,000 people have joined the waitlist.
